Join us as we kick off the season in the spirit of spontaneity. Unmeasured Baroque preludes by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre and Louis Couperin meet the free melodic improvisation of Hindustani alap that inspired Reena Esmail’s Zinfandel for solo flute. Johannes Brahms’ and Jessie Montgomery’s ecstatic rhapsodies face the playful onomatopoeia of Cathy Berberian’s Stripsody. André Previn’s and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s breathtaking vocalises transform the voice into an unbound melisma. The impromptu jazz of Art Tatum’s Willow Weep for Me joins the harmonic unpredictability of Franz Schubert’s Impromptu in C minor. An intoned chant gradually emerges from a low trembling drone in Shulamit Ran’s reflective piano trio Soliloquy. We open by collectively listening to the moment via Pauline Oliveros’ Tuning Meditation and close with Robert Schumann’s thrilling, mercurial fantasy pieces for piano and clarinet.
